How to Lose Weight: A Practical Guide to Achieving Your Goals

I know how to lose weight and keep it off! I lost over 220 pounds and have kept it off for over 15 years. I will give you a link to my story at the end of the blog. Everyone is different and what works for one person may not always work for someone else. This is why working with a professional can help.

Losing weight is a common goal, but it can often feel overwhelming. With countless diets, workout plans, and conflicting advice available, it’s easy to get lost in the process. However, losing weight doesn’t have to be complicated. By focusing on a few key principles and making sustainable lifestyle changes, you can achieve your weight loss goals in a healthy and effective way.

There are a some very important points we cover below that are very critical for getting to and maintaining a healthy weight.

  • Your microbiome has an effect on obesity and weight-loss. I would recommend a very good probiotic like MegasporeBiotics. Don’t forget that fiber is what feeds your healthy microbiome. You need fiber rich foods for a healthy microbiome.
  • In some cases people that need to lose weight cut their calories too much. If you do that you will stall your metabolism and could even gain weight!
  • Sleep is critical for weight-loss. When you sleep your body is able to balance hormones and make all the tens of thousands of chemicals you body uses every day. If you don’t get enough sleep (7 to 8 hours) you have a short fall of these very important chemicals and this creates internal stress and inflammation. Inflammation equals weight gain.
  • Stress reduction is necessary to lose weight! You have to manage stress or it will keep the weight on. When you have chronic stress you are staying in a state of fight or flight. This releases a lot of cortisol when builds mid section fat.
  • In can be more difficult for females to lose weight due to less muscle mass and hormonal issues. If you are stuck then it could be hormonal or mitochondria disfunction.
  • Mitochondrial disfunction cause the mitochondria (the body’s energy plants in every cell) to get stuck and only burn sugars. This makes it difficult to lose fat. This requires working with a health professional like myself to get the mitochondria healthy and able to burn fat again.
  • Healthy fats do not make you fat. Sugars and fast acting starches and processed foods creat weight gain and make it harder to lose weight..

1. Set Realistic Goals

•Start Small: Begin with manageable goals. Instead of aiming to lose 20 pounds in a month, focus on losing 1-2 pounds per week. This approach is more sustainable and less likely to lead to burnout.

•Be Specific: Rather than saying “I want to lose weight,” set specific, measurable goals like “I want to lose 10 pounds in 2 months” or “I want to fit into my favorite jeans by December.” For long term weight lose the slower you lose it the easier it is too keep it off.

2. Understand Your Caloric Needs

•Caloric Deficit: Weight loss occurs when you burn more calories than you consume. Use a calorie calculator to determine your daily caloric needs and aim to consume fewer calories than you burn.

•Mindful Eating: Pay attention to portion sizes, and try to eat slowly. This gives your body time to signal when it’s full, preventing overeating. What you eat also influences your ability to lose weight. Try to limit processed foods and foods high in starch and added sugar. Foods with a good amount of fiber will feed your microbiome and are filling helping to control appetite.

3. Adopt a Balanced Diet

•Whole Foods: Focus on whole, unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. These foods are nutrient-dense and keep you full longer. However, I would be careful with consuming too many grains. They tend to increaser blood sugar rapidly which can cause weight gain if you are not burning off the fast acting starches with vigorous exercise.

•Moderation: It’s okay to indulge occasionally. Depriving yourself can lead to binge eating. Instead, practice moderation and enjoy your favorite treats in small amounts. Practice the 80/20 rule. Eat very healthy 80% of the time and you can indulge 20% of the time and still maintain health. However, you may need to be more diligent to lose weight.

4. Incorporate Regular Exercise

•Cardio: Incorporate cardiovascular exercises like walking, running, cycling, or swimming. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio per week. If you have clearance

from your doctor I would also recommend some high intensity exercise. But no more than two to three times per week.

•Strength Training: Building muscle helps boost your metabolism and burn more calories, even at rest. Include strength training exercises 2-3 times a week.

5. Stay Hydrated

•Water: Drinking water can help control your appetite and prevent overeating. Sometimes, thirst is mistaken for hunger. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.

•Limit Sugary Drinks: Avoid sodas, energy drinks, and other sugary beverages such as fruit drinks that add unnecessary calories to your diet. Instead of drinking the fruit, eat the whole fruit.

6. Get Adequate Sleep

•Sleep and Weight Loss: Poor sleep can disrupt hormones that regulate hunger and appetite, leading to weight gain. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to support your weight loss efforts.

•Sleep Routine: Establish a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, even on weekends.

7. Manage Stress

•Stress and Eating: Stress can lead to emotional eating, where you eat not because you’re hungry, but because you’re stressed. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as through meditation, exercise, or hobbies.

•Mindful Practices: Practices like yoga and meditation can help reduce stress levels and improve your mental health, which is essential for weight loss.

8. Track Your Progress

•Keep a Journal: Record your food intake, exercise, and how you feel each day. This can help you identify patterns, stay accountable, and make necessary adjustments.

•Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge your progress, no matter how small. Celebrating small victories can keep you motivated on your weight loss journey.

9. Stay Consistent

•Long-Term Perspective: Weight loss is not about quick fixes; it’s about making lasting changes to your lifestyle. Stay consistent with your efforts, and don’t get discouraged by temporary setbacks.

•Healthy Habits: Over time, healthy habits like eating nutritious foods, exercising regularly, and managing stress will become a natural part of your life.

10. Seek Support
